Replacing Headlight Bulbs On A 2004 Mercedes ML320
(Covers M-Class Model Years 1998 to 2005)
In This Article:
A small shield is removed and 3
bolts are taken out. The headlamp assembly is unplugged
and removed from the car. The bulb compartments are
opened and the bulbs replaced.
The first step in changing the
headlight bulb in this Mercedes was to open the hood to gain
access to the head light area.
First I had to remove
the shield between the headlight and bumper
cover. Using a small flat screwdriver I
pushed down on the release clip and pulled
lightly.
After I released the
clip I swung the shield outward towards the
fender and unhinged the shield from the fender.
Here the shield has been
removed completely. The green arrow points to
the hinge and the red arrow points to the
release clip.
Now that the two nuts attaching the headlight
assembly to the body are exposed, I used a 10mm
socket to removed the two nuts.
With the 10mm socket I removed the top bolt (red
arrow).
Then with a flat screwdriver I pushed up the
factory assembly holding clip (green arrow).
With my thumb
I lifted the release clip and pulled both of
the wire harnesses out. Then I was able to remove
the headlamp assembly.
The green arrow points to the turn signal bulb. I turned
it to the left (counter-clockwise) to remove.
Using my thumb I pressed the release lever to
the low beam headlight bulb cover.
The cover just swung down to expose the bulb.

clip.
To remove the bulb, the wires are
unplugged and the retainer clip (red arrow) is
pressed and moved out of the way. Then the bulb
can be pulled out.
High Beam Removal:
To remove the high beam headlight bulb cover I
turned the cover to the left (counter-clockwise).

beam headlight bulb wiring and retainer clip.
To remove the high-beam bulb, the wires are
unplugged and the retainer clip is released.
Then the bulb can be pulled out.
Note On Handling
Headlight Bulbs:
Do not touch headlight
bulbs with your bare hands, because the oil on
your skin can ruin the light bulb. Use a paper
towel or tissue to handle the new light bulb.
